Tropical holiday packing list

Werahiko's

Essential packing list when going on a tropical holiday with children

Carry on items

  • Passport - the most important item!

  • Copy of travel itinerary - including all hotel, flight details and insurance details.

  • Suitcase with travel tags - we like to include ribbons to our suitcases as it just makes it easier to spot at the airport, but you can include anything that will make it stand out.

  • Foreign cash and debit/credit cards - most places now days prefer to charge a credit card but we always travel with cash as well, specially for local markets etc.

  • Electronic devices - cos we all want to document our holidays, pack camera's, phones, tablets, headphones, chargers, go pro if you have one all go into your carry on.

Checked Luggage

We have been travelling for a few years now and one thing I have learnt with kids is to pack a really good first aid kit. I usually don't need everything but it's just there for peace of mind.

First Aid Kit

  • Plasters/Band Aids

  • Bite cream - I sometimes pack a multi purposes cream to cover, bites, burns, scratches etc.

  • Antihistamine

  • Vitamin C

  • Ear Spray - in case of swimmers ear.

  • Herbal cough syrup - the plane can often cause a sore throat.

  • Paracetamol and Ibuprofen - we pack both liquid and tablet form.

  • Anti-inflammatory body rub

  • Colloidal Silver

  • Immunity support tablets - great if I'm feeling a bit run down.

  • Nasal Spray - one that can be used on adults and children.

  • Burn cream - An Aloe Vera is always good for sunburn, plus a cream for other burns.

Toiletries

  • Travel sized shampoo & conditioner

  • Sunscreen

  • Toothbrush and paste, plus charger

  • Moisturiser

  • Brush

  • Insect repellent - we pack 3 different options, spray on, rub on and often get the stick on patches as well, we find that the bugs on tropical islands can be intense and there are a lot illnesses you can pick up from them.

  • Lip sunscreen - my lips always get burnt.

  • Deodorant

  • Make up - personally I don't bother on holiday, just a bit of powder is enough as you are always swimming.

Clothing/Footwear

I am going to break this down into adults and children, as children definitely wear more clothes!

Children

  • T-shirts - 1 per day.

  • Shorts - 1 per day.

  • Underwear - 1 per day plus 3 extras.

  • Hat

  • Jumper/jersey - light weight as it does get cooler in evening.

  • Long pants - for on the plane or in evenings.

  • Walking shoes

  • Jandals/sandals

  • Aquashoes - depends if we are going to a lagoon or coral beach.

  • Beach towel - we always pack a towel, it just comes in handy.

  • Togs - 2 sets.

Adults

  • T-shirts - I always work out the days and then minus about 3 so for example if it's 7 days I would take 4 shirts as you are in your togs most of the day.

  • Shorts - same method as above

  • Underwear

  • Hat

  • Jumper/jersey

  • Long sleeve shirt - light weight for sitting out in evening to have a cocktail and not get bitten by insects.

  • Walking shoes

  • Jandals/sandals

  • Aquashoes - depends if we are going to a lagoon or coral beach.

  • Togs - 2 sets

  • Towel

  • Sarong

Extras

  • Kids Toys - a few teddies and fave toy

  • Reading Books

  • Sketch books and Pencils

  • Cards

  • life jacket - we pack a small life jacket for our 4 year old so they can come snorkeling and not get too tired.

  • Pool Toys - if I can I grab a couple of dive toys for the pool.

  • Snorkel gear - we mainly just take the face masks so we know they fit correctly.

  • Snacks - check the rules before you travel about food restrictions but we always pack some dry food just to tie the kids over between meals.
